Jacket blurb

Western Mediterranean

From the Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief,
Mediterranean, May 3rd, 1945

" Their Lordships congratulate you and all the officers and men under your command upon an achievement which will live in the annals of the Royal Navy and of which the end was worthy of a great beginning."

No one person can write of all the navies did during the eventful months of December 1942 to May 1945 in the Mediterranean, but the story richly deserves to be told in so far as one observer can tell it. That "Taffrail" was serving on the staff of two successive commanders-in-chief, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Andrew Cunningham (now Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope) and Admiral Sir John Cunningham, was our good fortune. His account of the work of the navies off North Africa, off Malta, off Sicily and the Isles of Greece is a personal, irreplaceable record.

WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN describes the adventures and actions of many different types of ships and those who served in them—cruisers, destroyers, minesweepers, motor torpedo boats, gunboats and launches, landing ships and craft. Many ships are mentioned by name or number, with the stories of individual officers and men, typical of the thousands who not only took a part in the total destruction of the enemy's sea forces, but successfully transported, supported and sustained the land and air forces until fighting in the Mediterranean theatre ended in victory.
