Clicking here will take you to larger unaltered images of the three spines . . .

General condition of all three volumes.

All volumes are shelf worn, rubbed and bumped - The top and bottom of spines are, as can be seen in the larger images below, starting to fray in places. All seem to have had labels pasted and later removed from the front boards, some more successfully - volume three is the least affected by this and the first hasn't faired so well.
The page block consists of thick semi-glossy paper, which is foxed lightly randomly throughout all volumes. In all volumes the tissue guard is intact.
Gilt top edge but other edges rough cut.

Anything of note about individual volumes will be found in their individual sections below.

Volume I
Of very great interest to me is this illustration, by Fred Jane, depicting the author clinging to the bowsprit of the Poole Packet just abeam of the Sallyport, which has just run down his wherry as he and a shipmate were leaving Portsmouth Harbour entrance to join their ship at Spithead.

Volume I

The bottom of the spine is frayed and the discolouration as a result of removing labels is worst on this volume but little foxing. There is a dedication by the author which some dealers claim is hand written but, as an extra page has been set aside , I believe it is a printed facsimile . [see below]

This volume in diary like entries covers the period from 1809 to 1844 in 340 pages.

All volumes are interestingly illustrated throughout. Amongst the artists in volume one are Fred T. Jane, E. Caldwell and J. W. Houghton.

Of very great interest to me was the illustration opposite, by Fred Jane, depicting the author clinging to the bowsprit of the Poole Packet which has just run down his wherry as he and a shipmate were leaving Portsmouth Harbour entrance to join their ship at Spithead.

Below is the title page.

The title page of volume one - a little foxing can be seen at lower right edge.

An image of the spine can be seen below

Volume II

Volume II

Basically in similar condition but bottom of spine not as damaged as volume one and the removal of the label from the front board is less obtrusive than volume one but not as good as volume three. This volume in diary like entries covers the period from 1844 to 1857 in 340 pages.

All volumes are interestingly illustrated throughout. Amongst the artists in volume two are Sir Oswald Brierly, Nina Dalyl and Col. Hon Sir W. Colville.

To the right is one of the many illustrations of HMS Mæander - some foxing visible but the majority are clear.

Volume III

Volume III

" Suspicious Junks " - an illustration from volume three of Admiral Sir Henry Keppel's autobiography !

Probably the best condition volume covering 1857 to 1876 in 350 pages including a good index. Image of front board to the right ->

Includes numerous illustrations as before.

At end of the book is what purports to be a handwritten ink " Farewells". Below this a previous owner has written in pencil-

" I used to meet Sir Henry Keppel at the Marlboro club. A fine old sailor and a true English gentleman. Everyone liked and respected him

W A-G "

An image of the spine can be seen below

This is the front board of volume three; the removing of the label has been acheived neatly making this the best result. Volume two's appearence is between the two!
