In 1797 Britain was at war with France and Spain, and a Navy in whose ships many foreigners served was her main defence. At Spithead and the Nore the Fleet mutinied and seriously alarmed all His Majesty's Ministers and the Admiralty. A few weeks later, in the disease-ridden and unpopular West Indies Station, in the little 32-gun frigate Hermione, the bloodiest mutiny in the'whole long history of the Royal Navy took place with dramatic suddenness.
Hugh Pigot, a brutal, sadistic and intemperate captain who makes Captain Bligh seem like a kindly humanitarian in comparison, disguised his own inadequacies with vicious, undeserved floggings, an obsessive insistence on smartness, and uncontrolled rages. Finally three sailors, frightened by Pigot's threats, fell to their deaths from the rigging and the crew reverted to the law of the jungle. They slaughtered Pigot and nine of his officers but spared the boatswain's wife, and eventually sailed into the Spanish port of La Guaira on the Spanish Main and handed over the valuable ship to the enemy, expecting to be rewarded and made welcome.
A great manhunt for all who had been on board followed, and in the next eight years thirty-three of the frigate's crew were caught in various parts of the world and twenty-four of them were hanged from the yard-arms of the King's ships. As for the Hermione herself, the Spaniards spent two years refitting her, manned her with a crew nearly three times larger than the normal British complement, only to have her captured by Captain Edward Hamilton leading 100 English sailors in six open boats.
This is the first full-length study of the Hermione mutiny, and much will surprise the most learned naval historian and the most blase schoolboy.
