Blurb-back of jacket The Royal Navy armed and fitted out literally thousands of wooden warships between 1600 and 1815. and virtually every item or process was the subject of alteration and improvement during this period. For the first time, in this book the precise details of these developments are set out, wherever possible with exact information on sizes and scantlings based on reliable contemporary sources. This makes the book an indispensable guide to all historical ship modellers, but it also provides a wider analysis of technological development which will be of great value to maritime historians and industrial archaeologists. Brian Lavery is one of the world's leading authorities on the sailing warship. Apart from contributing numerous articles to magazines and journals, he edited and introduced Deane's Doctrine of Naval Architecture, 1670, the earliest full treatise on the subject in English. He is also the author of the highly successful two-volume history of sailing battleships, The Ship of the Line — described by one authority as 'a successful merging of large format, profusely illustrated books with an authoritative and sophisticated text'. His contribution to the Anatomy of the Ship series, The 74-gun Ship Bellona establishes him as a draughtsman as well as historian.
