Cover blurb

As the eighteenth century drew to a close, a number of eminent sailors vied for the prestigious Mediterranean Command - Vice-Admiral Sir John Orde, Lord St. Vincent, Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, and Nelson himself.

Rivalry aplenty, and the conflict between Orde and St. Vincent was personal, not least over the appointment in 1798 of Nelson to command a Mediterranean squadron to follow Napoleon's fleet - a position which placed him above more senior officers such as Orde.

In Nelson's Mediterranean Command, this personal enmity amid the Anglo-French sea war between 1793 and 1805 comes vividly to life. Exact and informative, and redolent with the spectacle and excitement of naval warfare, this extensive biography covers an important subject from an original angle with styic, iilt-ctligence and authority.

He sits mainly in the North East, where he is Presiding Judge of a Crown Court and Chairman of the Regional Criminal Justice Liaison Committee, but also sits on the bench in London. He lives with his wife and family in a Georgian country house in his native Northumberland, and also in Oxford.
