At sixteen the author was apprenticed to W. Thomas Ltd. for four years and shortly joined his first ship, the clipper Marechal Suchet; built 1893 by A. McMillan & Son, Dumbarton; bound for Sidney then to Valparaiso with coal then to Vancouver. Then to Hamburg   via Cape Horn from whence he as sent on leave home to Liverpool and later re- joined his ship in Cardiff loading  coal for Rio de Janeiro  then in ballast to New York to load case–oil for Melbourne. After loading coal in Newcastle for Antofagasta, Chile sailed then back to Falmouth for orders to Hamburg.

Going on the leave after serving three years and four months the Captain informed him that when he re-joined the ship he would move aft into the cabin as third mate. This is all told in interesting detail covering life and conditions on board and details of the windjammer trade.

The Nelson page provides icons, usually adapted from the the covers, as links to books with Admiral Lord Nelson as the subject, a battle in which he played a prominent part or a warship associated with him or if of particular merit, a book that refers particularily to his period.
