Blurb This is the story of that great Service which has been through the centuries the first, and often the last, line of British defence, and the spearhead of Britain's expansion when the time came. In it Professor Lewis puts the Royal Navy into its true perspective in history in general and sea-history in particular. He shows its origin in the Crown's personal sea-force, still blended with, and largely reliant upon, the Country's total sea-force, and relates how it emerged as the principal fighting element in her sea-strength: principal, but not only, fighting element, because the natural reserves of the Royal Navy are, and always have been, an integral part of the whole Navy. The book develops chronologically, showing not only how the Navy— all of it—grew up, but also why it grew and, in its growth, what benefits it conferred upon the Country which it was created to serve. There are thus three interwoven strands—a Naval History, following, in such detail as space allows, the work and actions of the Service, and how they affected British policy as a whole; a History of the Royal Navy itself, showing its birth and development in ships, men, weapons, etc., and—its corollary—a History of its age-old Reserves, once the parents from which it sprang—the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Originally published as a Pelican Book, this work is now available in a cloth bound edition. |

My Postage and Packing charges are calculated before wrapping as best I can with a very nominal amount added for packaging costs. I am happy to pack together multiple buys made within a seven day period and post at cost as long as total value of purchases in the packet does not exceed the Royal Mail's maximum (Subject to more conditions than you can make sense of) built in compensation, which at the moment is £39.00. |
