Jacket flap blurb

The Ship that changed the World is the first full account, highly dramatic and strictly factual, of the events surrounding a naval battle which it derives its unquestionable importance in world history from the fact that it never took place.

As the First World War began the Germans had just one capital ship , the battlecruiser Goeben escorted by the light cruiser Breslau, in the Mediterranean. Commanded by a ruthless admiral and aided by the breathtaking incompetance of their enemies, the ship eluded the French Navy and the British Mediterranean Fleet to reach the Dardanelles.

Once there the Germans pushed Turkey into the war by bursting into the Black Sea under Turkish colours and shelling the Russian coast. The ensuing closure of the Dardanelles cut Russia off, precipitating the Revolution and forcing Lenin to conclude a humiliating peace with Germany. General Ludendorff said the Goebens coup doubled the length of the war. And Turkey's eventual defeat broke up its empire, causing a political upheaval in the Middle East which remains one of the main threats to world peace.

Drawing comprehensively for the first time on German and French as well as British sources, Dan van der Vat shows that the disastrous failure to bring the Goeben to action was due as much to the French as the British, who have borne the blame alone hitherto. He also shows that the whole story of the Goeben affair include high political and diplomatic drama, an exciting chase, the trial of a British admiral and as much action as a reader could wish - from the bombardment of Sevastopal to a forgotten naval war in the Black Sea and the unique tradegy of Gallipoli.
