Hero of Jutland in World War I, Kelly Maguire progresses rapidly to senior rank during the inter-war years — beset with difficulties as, in particularly dangerous times, politicians insist on cutting down the Navy's strength. Kelly finds himself involved in the appalling tragedy of the Russian Civil War of 1919-1920, when the Navy manned armoured trains and was occupied in the rescue of thousands of terrified White Russians while the Red Army approached and typhus decimated their regiments.

Readers of Max Hennessy's previous book, the first in The Lion at Sea series, will remember Kelly's lifelong romance with Charlotte Upfold (`Charley'). This becomes complicated by the appearance of a seductive Russian baroness. When Kelly finds himself concerned with the activities of the Yangtze gunboats during the Chinese troubles of 1927, there is yet another emotional entanglement, and this one leads to marriage, not to the unfortunate Charley but to the spoiled daughter of a wealthy aristocrat. Kelly's life suddenly seems to go haywire, and he returns to an England in the traumatic experiences of the naval mutiny at Invergordon. Kelly's confidence and initiative are typical of a hardened sailor, who is a born leader, and these, with a dash of luck and a little help from an old love and an old enemy, save him from disaster in a splendid and gripping climax to the book.

The Dangerous Years is a tremendous sequel in the story of Kelly Maguire. It is also a book with much period interest, dealing with vital incidents in British history not often featured in books about the Navy.

Max Hennessy is a new pseudonym for John Harris, author of The Sea Shall Not Have Them, etc. Ex-sailor, ex- airman, ex-newspaperman, ex-travel courier, he went to sea before the war from his job as a newspaperman, going into the Merchant Navy and doing his first trip in the Windjammer, Lawhill. During the war he served with two air forces and two navies, was twice reported lost at sea, and had to swim for his life on more than one occasion. He returned to newspapers after the war but is now a full-time writer. He lives by the sea and for many years kept up his interest in flying with a private pilot's licence,

My RETURNS & POSTAGE and PACKING Policies

If you wish to return a book please let me know as soon as possible but no later than three days after receipt.

If you feel, and I agree after we have discussed it, that my description was misleading or inaccurate then, upon the receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund all your payment plus your return postage.

If the book isn't what you really wanted and if we agree, then, upon my receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund your bid price.

I have found, so far, that the majority of my buyers are genuine.

For my part I try and describe the books as fairly as possible - I am not a professional - and do not like buyers to feel dissatisfied.

My Postage and Packing charges are calculated before wrapping as best I can with a very nominal amount added for packaging costs.

I am happy to pack together multiple buys made within a seven day period and post at cost as long as total value of purchases in the packet does not exceed the Royal Mail's built in compensation, which at the moment is £36.00.
