AIRCRAFT CARRIER
by
John Winton

1980
First published in Great Britain
by Michael Joseph Ltd, London.
ISBN 0 7181 1891 X

A navy cloth bound book with bright gilt lettering to the spine in VERY GOOD condition. Unfortunately although the pages are pristine there are some light dust/damp spots to page block edges; probably because it is an ex-library book (stamped with three small light red stamps "H.M.S. Norfolk's Library"). The VERY GOOD dust wrapper is unclipped.

Jacket blurb

April 1945. High in the sky above the Sakishima Gunto—the chain of Japanese-held islands running between Formosa and Okinawa—a flight of Corsair fighters from a British aircraft carrier has destroyed a flight of Japanese Nakajima (Oscar) fighters.
In Aircraft Carrier, John Winton has recaptured, vividly as though from a series of eyewitness accounts, the intensity of the last few months of the war in the Pacific. It was, in a way, a forlorn war. The campaign in Europe was almost over and nobody at home took much notice of the war in the East. But here, in authentic detail, are the thrills and dangers of aerial combat; the coastline of Japan seen from the air; the bars and clubs of wartime Sydney; the terrifying suicide attacks of the kamikaze bombers on the fleet; and, above all, the pilots the natural-born
killers, the careful "percentage players", and the shellshocked neurotics who should never have been allowed to fly again.
For the central character, the RNVR lieutenant-commander and squadron leader known to everybody on board as Skipper, there is a personal problem to be decided. His captain has suggested he might accept a permanent regular commission in the RN after the war is over. But at home in Wiltshire, Skipper's father is eagerly waiting for his only son to come home from the wars and take over the family farm and estate.
For Skipper his loyalty to his family, his duty to his country and his personal inclinations are all in conflict. Meanwhile, his task is to lead his squadron against the Japanese and hope that, perhaps, he might one day come safely home. . . .

My RETURNS & POSTAGE and PACKING Policies

If you wish to return a book please let me know as soon as possible but no later than three days after receipt.

If you feel, and I agree after we have discussed it, that my description was misleading or inaccurate then, upon the receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund all your payment plus your return postage.

If the book isn't what you really wanted and if we agree, then, upon my receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund your bid price.

I have found, so far, that the majority of my buyers are genuine.

For my part I try and describe the books as fairly as possible - I am not a professional - and do not like buyers to feel dissatisfied.

My Postage and Packing charges are calculated before wrapping as best I can with a very nominal amount added for packaging costs.

I am happy to pack together multiple buys made within a seven day period and post at cost as long as total value of purchases in the packet does not exceed the Royal Mail's built in compensation, which at the moment is £36.00.
