Editor's note This book originally appeared as three volumes under the title Grosskampfschiffe 1905-1970, published by Bernard & Graefe Verlag, Munich. In order to meet the requirements of a single publication, a number of revisions, affecting particularly the introductory notes and end matter, have had to be incorporated, and the text has also been amended to take account of, for example, British nautical terminology, a switch (where necessary) from Central European ) Greenwich Mean Time, and Imperial measures. Metric equivalents are, however, also quoted, for comparative purposes. In addition, a number of minor corrections to the original German text have been made and many of the maps and diagrams have had to be redrawn to accommodate English labelling.
