THE WRECK OF THE WHALESHIP ESSEX
A Narrative Account
by Owen Chase, First Mate

EDITED BY IOLA HAVERSTICK
AND BETTY SHEPARD

On the morning of November 20, 1820, the Nantucket whaler Essex, in the Pacific Ocean, was rammed twice by an enraged sperm whale and slowly began sinking. Her crew of twenty had time only to collect some bread, water, and a few possessions before pulling away in three frail open boats without charts and thousands of miles from any known land. There followed ninety days of privation and suffering on the wide sea—days of fear and despair often more debilitating than physical exhaustion.
Of the crew, only eight men are known to have survived. One of them was Owen Chase, first mate of the ill-fated ship, whose account of the long and perilous journey has become a classic document of human courage and endurance. Herman Melville drew on Owen Chase's narrative when he wrote Moby Dick: the original story deserves to be as well known through-out the world. This is an edited version for young people, with a prologue and epilogue to give historical perspective, and with a glossary of unfamiliar terms. It records a gallant saga of the sea—one that will enthrall readers and live long in their memories.

My RETURNS & POSTAGE and PACKING Policies

If you wish to return a book please let me know as soon as possible but no later than three days after receipt.

If you feel, and I agree after we have discussed it, that my description was misleading or inaccurate then, upon the receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund all your payment plus your return postage.

If the book isn't what you really wanted and if we agree, then, upon my receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund your bid price.

I have found, so far, that the majority of my buyers are genuine.

For my part I try and describe the books as fairly as possible - I am not a professional - and do not like buyers to feel dissatisfied.

My Postage and Packing charges are calculated before wrapping as best I can with a very nominal amount added for packaging costs.

With the new Royal Mail UK pricing it is, dependent on the weights, often impractical (and expensive) to pack books together so multiple buys within a seven day period are posted at cost. This means that in the case of Pay Pal payers the first book is sent off for the quoted P & P charge and I either quote for the subsequent P & P minus the overspend on the first book, or if it has been paid, refund the difference.
