What have Jacky Fisher and A.B. Cunningham in common? Both were First Sea Lords and Admirals of the Fleet. Both, in different wars, served under, and had notable passages of arms with, Winston Churchill. Both, by general consent, towered over the Navy of their day.
But these resemblances pale into insignificance beside the contrasts of character, of personality, with which this book is concerned.
Fisher's impishness and gift for epigram have assured his place in any general view of his times. `Favouritism is the secret of efficiency: `Moderation in war is imbecility.' Cunningham by contrast is virtually unknown to the general public except for the senior citizens who remember the war.
To redress the balance Cunningham is given much greater prominence in this double portrait. The fascination of Fisher, thanks to his own articulateness and to the work of notable editors and biographers, is familiar. Cunningham's lifelong cult of the Silent Service has been only too effective in concealing a personality of perhaps even greater power and attraction. The author has made good use of papers in the British Library and has had the advantage of conversation with men who served on his staff in the days of his greatness.
By its very nature the Navy, perhaps more than any other profession, has lived its own life. This essay in portraiture contributes greatly to its understanding.

Richard 0llard is an historian and biographer. He is the author of a number of books including Clarendon and his friends, Pepys: a biography and The escape of Charles II after the Battle of Worcester (available as a Constable paperback). My RETURNS & POSTAGE and PACKING Policies

If you wish to return a book please let me know as soon as possible but no later than three days after receipt.

If you feel, and I agree after we have discussed it, that my description was misleading or inaccurate then, upon the receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund all your payment plus your return postage.

If the book isn't what you really wanted and if we agree, then, upon my receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund your bid price.

I have found, so far, that the majority of my buyers are genuine.

For my part I try and describe the books as fairly as possible - I am not a professional - and do not like buyers to feel dissatisfied.

My Postage and Packing charges are calculated before wrapping as best I can with a very nominal amount added for packaging costs.

I am happy to pack together multiple buys made within a seven day period and post at cost as long as total value of purchases in the packet does not exceed the Royal Mail's built in compensation, which at the moment is £34.00.
